Grit by Angela Duckworth is one of my all time favourite non fiction books. It really levels the playing field for everyone.
It helps me believes that I don’t have to be super talented to be successful in life.
I can find successful just by working hard and through my passion and perseverance.
Here’s my quick summary of the book -
Insight 1: Passion + Perseverance = Grit
・ Key Idea: Success isn't about raw talent but rather a blend of passion and perseverance she calls "grit."
・ Action Items:
・ Identify your passion: Explore different interests to find what deeply motivates you.
・ Set long-term goals: Focus on big-picture objectives that align with your passion.
・ Practice perseverance: Commit to your goals, even when progress seems slow.
Insight 2: Effort Counts Twice
・ Key Idea: Duckworth introduces a formula, Talent x Effort = Skill and Skill x Effort = Achievement. Effort amplifies talent into skill and then translates skill into achievement.
・ Action Items:
・ Embrace effort: View effort as a path to mastery, not a sign of weakness.
・ Develop a growth mindset: Believe that your abilities can improve with hard work.
・ Track your progress: Regularly measure how your efforts are translating into skill development and achievements.
Insight 3: The Power of Perseverance
・ Key Idea: Perseverance means staying committed to your goals even in the face of adversity. Duckworth emphasizes the importance of not giving up on your objectives.
・ Action Items:
・ Expect setbacks: Prepare mentally for challenges and view them as opportunities to learn.
・ Build resilience: Develop coping strategies for dealing with disappointment and failure.
・ Stay focused on your long-term goals: Keep reminding yourself of the bigger picture and why it matters to you.
