I’ve read almost every significant productivity book released in the last 50 years.
(And you should too)
But I’ve realised that all of productivity boils down to 2 things - intention and reflection.
First intention -
Do you know what you want to do?
What do you want to do for your health
What do you want to do for your career
What do you want to do for your relationships
What you want to do next year
What you want to do next month
What you want to do next week
What you want to do next day
What you want to do next moment?
If not, take some time, get some perspective, make some plans.
Even if the plans don't work out, the mere act of planning will set your intentions straight. At least sub consciously you will have some clarity on what you want to do.
Then reflection -
After you've done the thing, look back and see did you do the thing you intended to do?
Did you go for a run
Did you wake up early
Did you say plan the birthday party?
Did you ship the feature
Did you did the outreach
Did you make the sale
Did you publish the video, the blog post, the tweet?
Intention without reflection is delusion.
Sure smart people say - "What got you here, won't get you there"
But more importantly, if you don't take the time to reflect, you won't know how you reached where you are right now!
So intention and reflection - looking ahead, and then looking back
That is all the productivity advise you need.
At the heart of it, every productivity book is trying to teach you these very ideas through different lenses - be it Atomic Habits, Slow Productivity, Getting Things Done or anything else.
Intention and Reflection
