“When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?” - JM Keynes
When I quit my job 3 years ago I had had enough of the corporate system.
I didn't want a boss ever again in my life. And I also didn't want to be someone else's boss ever again as well.
I didn't want to manage people.
I had realised that people make work more complicated than it needs to be.
Machines are simple, you write code, it runs, it does the job its assigned to do. No fuss, no stress.
People are complex, you tell them something, they interpret something else, and end up implementing something else altogether.
Which leads to all the drama and politics that has become part of corporate culture these days.
I was a coder, and thought like one.
So when I quit, I didn't want to work with people.
I wanted to be a "solopreneur" working for myself.
Of course I'll have clients and customers if I run ANY business.
But still, that's not the same.
I have the freedom to fire the customers that annoy me. This freedom was precious to me, and it still is to this very day, will always remain so.
But I was so naive on the solopreneur idea.
The deeper I went into any business, the more difficult it became for me to run it all on my own.
Be it my consulting business, the agency I ran or the SaaS products I wanted to build.
I realised that if I really wanted to build a serious business, I needed the help of other people on my side. It's too overwhelming for one person to do everything on his own.
At least for one person so limiting in abilities as I am.
The game really changed for me when I shed this belief of doing everything "solo" and decided to partner up with people.
That's when I met my business partner and we started an AI SaaS together.
My most successful project so far (out of the 20+ that I've tried). I realised the power of partnering up with talented, like minded people.
This strong belief of remaining solo was holding my progress back.
Gradually over the last 2 years I've learned how to find interesting people, hire them as freelancers or consultants or employees, or even partner up with them for new ventures.
There's so much you can achieve if you just have the courage to question your own beliefs and get rid of them when they're holding you back.
Your own beliefs are your strongest shackles, if something is not right in your life, maybe try questioning your beliefs. Maybe its time to update/improve them?
Found this talk by Tony Robbins quite useful in how to think about changing your beliefs -
